Why You Should Use Claude Cowork Instead of ChatGPT and Copilot

You probably use ChatGPT because you are familiar with it. Or Copilot, because it comes with your Microsoft subscription. Both understandable – but it is worth taking a closer look.

For context

We have no partnership or compensation agreement with Anthropic. This article is based solely on our own daily work and conversations with finance teams. We have simply found that Claude Cowork delivers significantly better results for finance tasks as of today.

If you work with ChatGPT or Copilot, you probably know the pattern: the results are okay, but you end up correcting them frequently. You upload multiple documents and notice the quality drops with each additional file. On longer tasks, the tool loses track.

Claude Cowork by Anthropic currently delivers significantly better results for finance tasks and is a competitive advantage for teams that use it. Important: we are talking about the desktop app, not the browser version. Claude Cowork is only available through the desktop app.

What Claude Cowork does better for your work

1

Large data volumes and long documents

Claude Cowork processes very long texts and large spreadsheets – contracts, bank statements, Excel exports with thousands of rows – and maintains context across all of the material. With ChatGPT and Copilot, it frequently happens that details get lost on longer documents or multiple uploads, and answers become increasingly vague. Claude Cowork stays precise – even on page 40 of a contract or row 2,000 of a spreadsheet.

2

Analytical precision

Finance requires accuracy. Claude Cowork hallucinates less often, is more upfront when it is uncertain, and can be steered very precisely through clear instructions. When Claude Cowork does not know something, it says so – instead of generating a plausible-sounding but wrong answer (in the AI world, this is called “hallucinations”).

3

The best Excel add-in on the market

Claude Cowork has its own Excel add-in that is consistently rated higher than Copilot in Excel by independent testers. In a financial modeling benchmark by Wall Street Prep (February 2026), Claude scored 5.5 out of 10 points – Copilot scored 4.4, ChatGPT 2.5. The difference: Claude Cowork understands the structure of a spreadsheet at a deeper level, can explain which cells it references, and does not crash when the table gets larger. A tech reviewer from XDA put it this way: “It beats Copilot at its own game.”

The data privacy question

Data privacy is a baseline requirement for finance teams – not a nice-to-have. The three major providers (OpenAI, Microsoft, Anthropic) differ significantly in how they handle your data: in training, retention, and contractual guarantees.

We are currently working on a dedicated article that compares the data privacy differences between ChatGPT, Copilot, and Claude Cowork in detail. In the meantime, one clear recommendation: never use a free or consumer tier for business data – this applies to all providers equally.

What you concretely gain

Typical tasks from the finance day-to-day and what changes with Claude Cowork:

Reviewing contracts and documents

Upload a 50-page vendor contract and ask: “What are the termination notice periods, and are there any automatic renewal clauses?” Claude Cowork finds the relevant passages and summarizes them in the structure you specify.

Excel analysis and financial models

Upload your P&L statement or chart of accounts export and have Claude Cowork build a variance analysis against the prior year – including explanations for the largest outliers. Or build a 3-statement model with scenario analysis directly in the Excel add-in.

Month-end close and reporting

Give Claude Cowork your raw numbers and ask for a management summary draft for leadership. Or have it match open items from your accounts receivable aging report against bank statements and list discrepancies.

Tax and regulatory questions

Ask Claude Cowork whether a transaction qualifies for reverse charge, or have it summarize the relevant sections of a new tax guidance letter. Claude Cowork flags uncertainties instead of presenting a wrong answer with full confidence.

Claude Cowork makes switching easy

Claude Pro costs $20/month – comparable to ChatGPT Plus and cheaper than M365 Copilot. The desktop app is available for macOS and Windows.

If you want to bring your existing AI memory with you: we have a step-by-step guide that walks you through the complete switch in about ten minutes.

Important: Use the desktop app

Claude Cowork is only available through the desktop app (macOS and Windows), not through the browser. The app offers quick access via keyboard shortcut from any application, local file management, and the autonomous Cowork mode that works through complex tasks independently. Download at claude.ai/download.

How to get started

1

Create a Pro account

Sign up at claude.ai and go straight to the Pro plan ($20/month). Never use a free tier for business data – with any provider. Then download the desktop app.

2

Test a complex task

Pick a task where ChatGPT or Copilot have not delivered convincing results so far. For example: upload your latest P&L and ask “Build a variance analysis against the prior year month with explanations for all line items with more than 10% deviation.” Or have Claude Cowork review a framework agreement and extract all deadlines, price adjustment clauses, and termination conditions.

3

Show your team

The best way to convince your team is a concrete result. Show them the direct comparison – the quality speaks for itself.

The bottom line

Claude Cowork is currently the best AI tool for finance tasks. That is a real competitive advantage for teams that use Claude Cowork.
