What is Claude in Excel?
Claude in Excel is an official add-in from Anthropic that embeds the AI assistant Claude directly in Microsoft Excel. Instead of switching back and forth between a browser and your spreadsheet, you open a sidebar in Excel and chat with Claude about your workbook right there.
What makes it special: Claude reads your entire workbook – including all tabs, formulas and cell contents. Its answers include cell references so you can see exactly what Claude is referring to. And when Claude suggests changes, existing formula dependencies are preserved.
Prerequisites
- Subscription: Claude Pro ($20/month), Max, Team or Enterprise. The free plan is not sufficient.
- Excel version: Excel 2016 or later (Windows), Excel 16.46+ (Mac), Excel for the web, or Excel on iPad (2.51+).
- Operating system: Windows or macOS – a Microsoft 365 subscription is required on Windows.
Installation in 4 steps
- In Excel: Insert → Get Add-ins (same on Mac and Windows). The Microsoft Office Add-in Store will open.
- Search for “Claude by Anthropic”.
- Click “Add” and confirm the permissions.
- The Claude sidebar opens – sign in with your Claude account and you are ready to go.
Note: Do not go through Tools → Add-ins – that path is for classic Excel add-ins (.xla/.xlam) and opens the file browser instead of the Office Store.
Keyboard shortcut: Ctrl+Option+C (Mac) or Ctrl+Alt+C (Windows) opens Claude at any time.
What Claude in Excel can do
Claude works directly with your workbook and can:
- Explain formulas – break down complex nested formulas in plain language, with references to the relevant cells.
- Debug errors – identify and resolve #REF!, #VALUE!, circular references and other issues.
- Clean data – standardize date formats, remove duplicates, create categorizations.
- Build models – create financial forecasts, scenario analyses, DCF valuations and sensitivity tables from scratch.
- Consolidate – merge data from multiple tabs, calculate variances and format reports.
- Pivot tables & charts – create them, apply conditional formatting, sort and filter data.
Within the add-in you can switch between Sonnet 4.6 (faster, great for straightforward tasks) and Opus 4.6 (more powerful, ideal for complex analyses). For most everyday tasks Sonnet is more than sufficient – for multi-step financial models it is worth switching to Opus.

Tips & Notes
How to get the most out of it
- › New thread for new tasks: Start a fresh chat for every new task. A long conversation history dilutes the context and leads to less accurate responses.
- › Assign a role: Give Claude a clear role at the start – e.g. “You are an auditor” or “You are an FP&A analyst”. This noticeably improves the quality of responses.
- › Provide context: Tell Claude what the workbook contains and what it is used for. The more background you provide, the more precise the answer.
- › Work step by step: Break complex tasks into multiple prompts – first clean, then analyze, then format.
- › Verify results: Especially with formulas and calculations: spot-check the output and trace the logic. Claude is not a substitute for manual review on audit-critical calculations.
- › Save your prompts: Chat history is not preserved between sessions. Keep good prompts in a separate document.
- › Sensitive data: Only use personal or highly confidential data with appropriate controls in place. Data is deleted within 30 days.
- › No VBA/macro support: Claude in Excel currently does not support macros, VBA, Power Query or Power Pivot.
- › Stuck? Ask Claude directly – including for help with installation or finding a menu item. You can even attach a screenshot of your screen and Claude will show you the next step.
Only use trusted files
Only use Claude in Excel with your own workbooks. External templates or shared documents could contain manipulated instructions (known as prompt injection) that lead Claude to take unintended actions.
For IT admins: enterprise-wide deployment
The add-in can be deployed centrally via the Microsoft 365 Admin Center: go to Settings → Integrated Apps → Add-ins, search for “Claude by Anthropic for Excel” and deploy it for the desired user groups. Make sure that under Settings → Org Settings → User owned apps access to the Office Store is enabled. Full instructions are available in the Claude Help Center.
Conclusion
Claude in Excel brings AI to where finance teams actually work – right inside the spreadsheet. Installation takes just a few minutes. You can find all the details on the official Claude in Excel page.
